Database Introduction

A database is an application, normally on a server, that stores information in a logical formating schema predefined by the database creator. One of the most widely used databases is Google. A database can be user for storing almost any type of data. One of the easiest to use database programs is Microsoft Access. Access is designed for ease of use; therefore, the database and reports are easier to design. Also, data mining is a form of searching and compiling data from multiple databases. When searching a combination of databases, the combination of databases is called a data warehouse. The world of databases is a very informative place.

Overview of Access

Microsoft Access is a part of Microsoft’s Office suit. Access was designed to be an easy to use databaselow-end database. According to Microsoft (2008), “With its Microsoft Office Fluent user interface and interactive design capabilities that do not require deep database knowledge, Microsoft Office Access 2007 helps you track and report information with ease.” With Access being easy to use, most users are able to pickup the software and begin designing databases in a few hours. Access has been around for years, so most users in the business world are able to start using the new version in no time. One disadvantage to Access is the scalability; Access is not designed or recommended for a major database project. Access is a good tool for small office use.

Data Mining

Data mining is typically misunderstood by users to mean searching a database. According to Anderson.ucle.com (2008), “Generally, data mining (sometimes called data or knowledge discovery) is the process of analyzing data from different perspectives and summarizing it into useful information – information that can be used to increase revenue, cuts costs, or both.” Data mining gets data from the database and compiles the data into useful information. Data mining is considered building a chart from the information in a database. Data mining is a very significant part of keeping databases.

Data Warehouses

When people think of data warehousing, they typically think of a large building with lots of computers. According to SearchSQL.com (2007), “A data warehouse is a central repository for all or significant parts of the data that an enterprise’s various business systems collect.” A data warehouse is normally one or more computers that contain multiple databases. Companies such as Google have multiple computers stretched across the world. These computers are considered to be a data warehouse and the location of this warehouse is www.google.com. The data warehouse is a very important part to the information technology age.

Conclusion

To conclude, it is evident from the information presented that Microsoft Access, data mining, and data warehousing are all key factors in database design. Also, one can conclude that databases store information; thus, databases control the information era.
